Connecting To Haven

First and foremost, you'll need to connect to the game using a telnet client or your favorite MUD client.

For Windows users, the best client out there is Zmud/Cmud by Zuggsoft. You can download older versions for free, or purchase a license for the newest version of Cmud. You can also try Mushclient, which is completely free to use. For Linux users, a number of good clients exist. For a console-based MUDding experience, TinTin++ is a good choice. For a full-featured GUI client, Mudlet is a free and open source client under active development.

Regardless of the client you choose, you'll want to create a new connection and enter the address and port of Haven's MUD server.

Address: havenmud.net Port: 2000

Activate the connection and you'll be greeted by Haven's login screen.

Choosing A Name

Now comes the time to figure out what you'll call your character on Haven. Haven does have a few rules regarding naming, which can be found on the Rules page. Put briefly, your character name should be an actual name, not a 'screenname'. VampSlayer, TheDude, or anything of that nature are unacceptable. Names which are taken directly from popular culture are also inappropriate. This changes as popular culture changes, but assume that if you're taking your name from a TV show or Anime series, it's not going to fly. Websites such as 20000-names are a good resource for name ideas from different cultures.

Once you've chosen a name, enter it, and you'll be asked to confirm it. Following this, you'll be asked for a password. This should be something easy to remember but difficult for someone else to guess. Do not use the same password for all of your characters and DO NOT use a password that you use for any other accounts such as online banking or email.

After entering a password, you'll be asked whether your client supports ANSI colors. If you're using one of the MUD clients listed above, you can answer Y. Most telnet clients and consoles support ANSI color, so answering Yes is safe for most, but if you're unsure answer no. You can turn color on later in the game.

Archetype Selection

Haven offers three Character Archetypes you can select from to give your character a set of Default Character Sheet stats.

  • Warrior - Focuses on brute strength and combat prowess. For someone new to Haven or MUDding in general, this is a good option for a first character.
  • Rogue - Focuses on stealth and Social stats.
  • Cleric - Focuses on Mental stats and offers a handful of starting spells.

You can choose from one of these pre-built archetypes, or you can enter CUSTOM to set your character sheet manually after you enter the game. Note: Skills (including basic combat) are based on your character sheet stats. Choosing to create a custom charsheet will have you enter the game with No Skills At All. If you choose that route, be sure to use the 'create' command and set your character's stats as soon as you begin playing.

Archetype Selection

Race Selection

Once you've made an archetype selection, you'll be asked if you wish to start the game as a Vampire. This is a good idea for most, as it will give you access to a number of abilities, such as regeneration and Disciplines, that will give you an edge early in the game. However, Haven offers two other Races that are not available upon creation and you will not have access to those options if you choose to become a vampire now. The choice is yours.

If you decide to become a Vampire, you'll then be asked which clan you wish to join. You have the option of nine different clans to choose from at creation. Assamite, Brujah, Gangrel, Malkavian, Nosferatu, Ravnos, Toreador, Tremere, or Ventrue. Each clan has its own strengths and weaknesses and you're encouraged to read up on each clan before making a selection. A good choice for those new to Haven is Brujah. Brujah start with the disciplines of Celerity and Potence, which will aid you greatly in combat.

Clan Selection

Entering the Game

If you chose not to become a vampire, or immediately following clan selection, You'll be dropped into the game. You'll see the Message Of The Day with some basic information, welcoming you to the MUD. You'll then gain control of your character at the starting location, the entrance to the Newbie School.
